Exploring poetry as away to express ideas, understanding and belief.
I have finally arrived at those golden years when there is no compulsion to leave the house every morning and subject myself to other people’s whims, simply for the reassurance that the household bills will be paid this month. I now have a (limited) guaranteed income that will not suffer if I choose to have a lazy start to the day and stay in bed until lunchtime. My time is my own, or at least it should be!
My dear and adoring wife demands a claim on my time, as do my adult children and their families; babysitting is a word that passes their lips far too frequently. Actually, family is very important to us and I delight in being educated by my grandchildren. So I still struggle to find time to write but I’m making an effort.
As a practising Christian, my faith influences my writing, and God regularly shows up in my poems. I would not readily describe them as “Christian Poems” though; not many are sweet, comforting and loving. That is, they can be sweet, comforting and loving, but they do not shy away from the pressures and difficulties of life in the 21st century. Even the most committed believer can have circumstances that begin to overwhelm them. My poetry wrestles with these pressures of life and a continuing, developing, faith in God.
